Competa
61Competa is a White Village, situated in Axarquia, the coastal province east of Malaga. It is an ideal holiday destination for either relaxing or activities such as walking, off-road motorbikes or horse riding.
Competa set some 638 metres above sea level in the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga & Granada, that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean.
The local climate produces more than 300 sunny days a year and temperatures are pleasant all year round.
In this part of Spain the culture offers a mix of Mediterranean and Arab customs dating from earlier times. The Cities of Malaga, Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba are nearby.
The village is surrounded by a 4,000 hectares wide wildlife reserve, for avid walkers the Sierra Almijara has peaks as high as 2,068 metres. As well as a stunningly beautiful natural park where you can go for walks to encounter eagles, mountain goats and a very rich vegetation.
Yet in less than 30 minutes by car you will be on the sandy beaches or in one of the many holiday resorts along the coast; Nerja, Torrox or Torre del Mar.
Competa has approximately 35 bars and restaurants offering excellent meals or tapas at low prices.
Competa has one of the best climates in Europe, therfore the land surrounding the village and down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as mango, avocado and kiwi, all ideally suited to this sub tropical climate. The locally produced Moscatel wine is famous throughout the region. Each year on The 15th August the village celebrates ´Notch del Vino´ (The Night of the Wine) celebrating from lunchtime until the early hours of the next day the new crop and ultimately the next year´s reserves!
Noche del Vino is an old tradition that has been celebrated for a long time. Traditionally the people of Competa went to their cortijos in the campo during the wine picking season and didn't return to the village until October, once the raisins had been packed and the grapes pressed. On August the 15th they met at Plaza Almijara for a farewell party, where they sang, danced and drank the famous local wine.
In 1975 Noche del Vino was made official. It is now organised by the town hall and includes a programme that enables visitors to get in touch with local traditions.
The celebration commence with a demonstration of 'la pisa de la uva' (treading of the grapes), followed by a free country-style lunch with 'migas de harina' (garlic and meat cooked with flour), sardines, rural salad (peppers, oranges, onions, olives and tomatoes) and chorizo (sausages). Both of these activities are accompanied by local musicians. The party continues into the evening until the early hours of the next morning with flamenco music and dancing in Plaza Almijara.
Come and enjoy the wine!!

Finally somebody has written about this lovely little village!!! Thanks for all the interesting information!
Having been to the village I agree with all said - you have done Competa proud with this description. I missed the Night of Wine so I feel another visit may be in order....
My home and perfectly described. Cómpeta has so very much to offer and is a must visit for all those thinking that Spain just consists of the Costas. Nice though they are, if you are looking for the traditional Spain with a friendly welcome, then Cómpeta ticks all the boxes.
i never heard Competa before...thank you for introducing it thru this hub.. i learned something new! :)
I'd never heard of it either. Sounds narvellously... Spanish. But I'm two months too late -- blast!
